Architecture and technical lead for large-scale eCommerce platforms

B2B/B2C platforms on SAP Hybris for international brands, with technical lead over teams of up to 10 developers.

Situation. Between 2009 and 2019 I worked mainly on large-scale B2B/B2C eCommerce platforms for national and international brands, among them Bose, Levi’s, Straumann, Krefel, Plutosport and DMLights. These platforms run on SAP Hybris (SAP Commerce), with large catalogues, high volumes and a tight coupling to the back-office systems.

Approach. Depending on the engagement I took on the role of technical architect, technical lead or senior developer. On each of these projects I was involved end to end: from requirements gathering with the client to delivery in production.

The work covered, among other things:

Solution and integration architecture for the storefronts and their surrounding systems;
Integrations with SAP CRM, ECC and PI for customer, order, pricing and stock data;
Integrations with other back-office systems;
Performance and scalability work: caching, query and Solr index optimisation, and removing bottlenecks under heavy load;
Setting up CI/CD pipelines and cloud hosting on AWS;
Technical lead over distributed teams of up to 10 developers: architecture choices, code and review standards, and coaching developers.

The project work was done both remotely and on site at the client.

Result. Several international brands got a B2B/B2C platform on SAP Hybris that handled high volumes and peak load, with a stable link to their back office. Fixed architecture and release processes let us deliver as a team, on time and within the agreed budgets.
